DISCOVERY:
How are great discoveries made?
How are great discoveries made?
When asked to think about how great discoveries are made, I immediately think of the eureka moment from movies. This was exemplified by the clip of Back to the Future, where they figure out how to get back...to...the...future. It was this big realization that suddenly made everything clear.
LEARN:
This moment, when it occurs in science, is the beginning of the process. It is a realization that sparks a hypothesis, that must be tested, retested and then verified. Scientists all over the world use the same method in every experiment to grow the field of science.
This process can be simplified into this chart
Getting children excited about the scientific method is a challenge. One idea is to use the multimedia tool, brain pop. I took a quiz on the scientific method, and I did alright.
9/10 is an A- right? |
This quiz was fun and engaging, and there were videos associated with the quiz that were easy to find and view.
EXPLORE:
Another resource teachers have is youtube. There are tons and tons of videos about the scientific method and scientists that engage young learners
Here is an example of one:
This video is an early ad campaign from Apple and had many familiar faces and scientists that have changed the world. I think this would appeal to young learners who would recognize these people as heroes because they were unafraid to question the nature of their reality.
In another video, a researcher described how his team used the scientific method to make an astounding discovery about gecko feet.
The last line is something that stuck with me. Robert Full says, "You don't know what can't be done." I want this quote printed out and hung in my future science center. It also speaks the the essence of this video, and this scientists lab. Things start with a question, there are no outlandish questions in science.
WONDER AND WOW:
Three things I discovered on this journey:
- Science is cyclical
- Discovery is not an end, it opens another door
- The resources for teaching science are vast and multi modal
Two interesting facts or details:
- Geckos has furry toes.
- The scientific method is not the law of science, it is a guide to making discovery
Important Characteristics of a scientist:
- Wonder about the world
- Willingness to be wrong
- Accept change as new information is discovered
- Be flexible with ideas
